5 Driveway Enhancements to Try

Are you Looking for a way to spruce up your yard — why not enhance your driveway? As the entryway to your home, your driveway should be inviting and welcoming. So if it’s time to change up your entrance way, here are five things you can do to enhance your driveway:

1. Light It Up! Landscape lighting will not only show off your beautiful pavement, but it can help illuminate and protect your yard. It will help keep intruders and pests out and will allow for easier parking at night.

2. Add a Gate or Walkway. Nothing classes up a long and winding driveway more than a gate! Bonus — it will also add extra security too. If you don’t already have one, a clear walkway to the front door is also a nice touch.

3. Add Some Edge.
One of the simplest yet most effective ways to dress up your driveway is to add a defined edge. Not only is it aesthetically pleasing, but it will also help keep the pavement clear from plants, leaves, and debris.

4. Don’t Forget the Details.
Plants, trees, stones, fountains, or even a small garden fence can all be beautiful ways to dress up your yard. You can play around with different textures within the driveway, or add mixed materials. The options are limitless!

5. Don’t Forget to Maintain it.
No matter how you enhance it, you have to maintain it! Be sure to clean it regularly; repave or power wash when needed. Regular maintenance will extend its lifespan and save you money in the long run.

3 Things to Know About Proper Yard Drainage

Are you noticing puddling or ponding around your driveway or walkway? You might have a drainage issue, and if it’s not corrected it can lead to the death of your grass and the deterioration of your driveway. So before you call in the expert, here are 3 things you should know about proper yard drainage:

1. Check For an Easy Fix.
Before you get into any major projects, inspect the area fully to see where the water is originating from. It could be discharge from your sump pump or downspout. If this is the case, lengthening or redirecting your downspout might be all you need to fix the issue.

2. Draw Out a Plan.
If the drainage problem is beyond a simple six, it’s time to get strategizing and sketching! Include your entire property and street, using your preferred leveling method to pinpoint the high and low spots. Don't forget to mark how the water flows. If you think draining water into the street or storm sewer is best, check with your city as regulations may apply.

3. Consider Building.
If you couldn’t find a quick fix, and you feel like your property doesn’t allow you to drain water easily, there is still hope. If you want to spruce up your yard in an environmentally friendly way, you can build a rain garden by adding water loving plants. Or why not create a creek bed? Start by making a shallow drainage ditch and line with stones, boulders or gravel. Not only is your problem solved but your yard is spruced up too.

If you are having trouble finding a proper drainage solution, or need to repair a deteriorated driveway, call the experts at Roccie’s Asphalt and Paving. We are proud to be the number 1 paving contractor in Fairfield County Connecticut and Westchester County New York! Request an estimate today!

3 Reasons to Go Green With Asphalt

When you think of asphalt, what comes to mind? Your driveway, or a parking lot perhaps? Maybe an affordable option? But did you know that it’s also environmentally friendly, can last a lifetime, and upkeep is easy and quick? Making it an Eco-friendly option with several wonderful uses! Below are just three reasons why you should go green with asphalt:

1. Safety First
Easy and affordable to repair, asphalt roads provides a smooth, skid-free surface with gripping power that minimizes the cost of vehicle maintenance. Open-graded asphalt reduces weather-related accidents as rainwater drains through the pavement causing less splash and spray kicked up by cars and trucks.

2. Reduced, Reused and Recycled
It requires less energy to produce and construct than other pavements, and can also save energy. Easy to build and repave, there is no need to wait days or weeks for lanes to reopen. As soon as the road is compacted and cooled, it's driveable, helping reduce congestion and saving travelers fuel.  Pavement is also highly reused and reclaimed keeping cost on materials low.

3. A Never Ending Lifespan
With generally no wear, upkeep on asphalt is minimal. In most cases, only the top layer will need replacing, and it can be done quickly and efficiently saving taxpayers money. The smoother the road, the longer the lifespan. There is also less waste on natural resources, making it the environmentally friendly choice.

How to Pick the Best Driveway for Your Home

Choosing the perfect driveway can not only add style to your yard but value to your home. With a wide variety of options, how can you know what to choose? Below are just some of the options you should consider when installing a new driveway or repaving your current one:

Gravel

Cheap and quick to install,  gravel is common throughout the U.S., and with a wide variety of color you can customize it to your liking. If you live in an area with a considerable amount of snow, gravel isn’t for you as shoveling can be difficult. It also creates dust and requires a refresh every 1 to 5 years.

Concrete
Durable and cost-effective, concrete comes in a wide array of styles and is ideal for all areas of the U.S. with barely any upkeep.  The downside? Stain such as tire marks or oil can be hard to remove.

Brick
If you are looking for a bold yet elegant choice, brick is the way to go. It will also boost the resale value of your home and can last up to 25 years. However, it is one of the most costly surfaces.

Pavers
Most aesthetically appealing, pavers are readily available with a large selection and low maintenance cost. Installation can be expensive, and if replacements are ever needed, it might be hard to find a match.

Asphalt
Affordable, pliable and has a better freeze and thaw cycle than other material, asphalt is a popular choice. It also can aid in melting snow. It does require more upkeep than other options, but the cost is minor.

Get Your Asphalt Summer Ready

With warm weather around the corner, it’s time to get your yard summer ready, including your driveway and patio. Spring cleaning your asphalt is just one way to give your neighbors yard envy.

Follow the steps below, and you will surely increase your curb appeal this summer:

Don’t Forget to Prep
First thing’s first, check the weather. When resealing the driveway, you will need time for it to dry and set. Before getting to work, make sure that the next three days will be rain free.

Review the Checklist
Make a list of all the equipment and supplies you’ll need and don’t forget to purchase gloves and protective eye wear. When purchasing a cleaner, double check the label.  Concrete cleaners can do serious damage to asphalt.

Start the Prepping
Now that you’ve purchased all your supplies, It’s time to get to work. Move all patio furniture, and cars out of the way and sweep all dust, leaves, and debris.

Inspect for Damage and Repair.
Be sure to do a thorough inspection of the area. Check for any cracks, holes or damage that might need fixing and pay close attention to the edge and ends of the driveway. Even the littlest crack should be fixed as it will only grow longer and wider with time.

Scrub Away
It’s time grab the hose and broom.  Begin at the highest point of your driveway and with a hard bristle broom, scrub the area paying close attention to oil or grease stains. Flush all soap and dirt residue with either a power washer or garden hose until clean.  For tough, deep down oil stains, follow with an oil primer.

Seal Your Work
After the driveway is thoroughly cleaned and completely dry, now it’s time to seal it. Follow directions closely.  Do not walk on your drive for at least 8 hours after the last coat and no driving on it for two days.
