Common Causes for Driveway Drainage Problems

Do you experience standing water and puddles in your driveway after every rainstorm? Driveway drainage issues are a common complaint among homeowners; not only is it an inconvenience, standing water can break down the surface of your driveway and cause the asphalt to deteriorate prematurely.

Here are three of the most common reasons for driveway drainage issues, and what you can do to fix them.

Lack of a Drainage System
The most common cause for driveway drainage issues is not having a drainage system to begin with. Common drainage solutions include trench drains, which are grated openings similar to sewers, and porous asphalt, which naturally allows water to run through it and drain into the ground below. If you don't currently have a drainage system, installing one is easier during a complete repaving, but they can also be implemented into your existing driveway.

Uneven Driveway
The slope of your driveway plays a key role in how effectively it can drain water. If you have an uneven surface, water will run down from high spots and puddle in the low spots. Another factor is the slope of the area around you – it is much easier to drain water when you live on top of a hill than it is when you live on the bottom of one. If you have an uneven driveway, the best thing to do it contact a paving contractor to resurface it.

Surface Damage
If the surface of your driveway is ridden with cracks and potholes, it will give rainwater a place to collect. To make things worse, it also gives the water easier access to the foundation of your driveway, where it can freeze and expand during cold weather to further worsen the damage. Prevent this by patching all cracks and holes immediately and sealcoating your asphalt driveway every 2-3 years.
